- Water Temp: Boil water, then remove from heat for 30 seconds (~180°F / 82°C). Never leave water on an active burner.
- Submerge: Place the guard in hot water for exactly 30 to 45 seconds.
- Vacuum Suction: Seat on upper teeth, bite down gently, and suck all air and water inward hard.
- Ice Bath: Submerge in cold ice water for 2 minutes to lock the molecular polymer shape.
4 Common Mistakes That Ruin Boil-and-Bite Protection
A poorly molded mouthguard will fall out when you talk, cause gagging, or provide zero shock absorption. Avoid these critical mistakes to get dental-grade retention at home:
Mistake 1: Bite-Through
Biting with full jaw power squeezes all protective gel out from underneath your teeth. Bite gently!
Mistake 2: Boiling Water
Dropping a guard into boiling water warps the outer exoskeleton and shrinks the mouthguard.
Fix: Thumb Pressure
Firmly massage your lips and gums with your thumbs while biting to mold the gel around your gumline.
Fix: Remolding
If the guard is loose, place it back into hot water for 20 seconds and repeat the vacuum suction.
