How to Mold a Boil and Bite Sports Mouthguard
A proper custom fit is the difference between full dental protection and dangerous jaw impact. What You Will Need Before Starting:
Boil Water & Cool for 30 Seconds
Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Remove the pot from the heat source and let it sit still for 30 seconds (ideal temperature: ~175°F / 80°C).
Submerge Guard (45 to 60 Seconds)
Using your tongs, carefully lower the mouthguard into the hot water. Keep it submerged for 45 to 60 seconds until the thermo-polymer material becomes soft and pliable.
Quick 1-Second Cool Dip
Remove the guard from the hot water with tongs and dip it into a bowl of room-temperature water for 1 to 2 seconds. This removes excess scalding surface water while keeping the interior moldable.
Center, Bite & Create Strong Suction
Using a mirror, align the center notch of the mouthguard with the centerline of your upper teeth. Bite down firmly (do not bite through). Simultaneously, press your tongue hard against the roof of your mouth and suck all air and water out. Use your thumbs and fingers to firmly press the exterior walls against your gums for 45 seconds.
Lock Shape in Ice Water (2 Minutes)
Carefully remove the mouthguard from your mouth and place it directly into your bowl of ice-cold water. Let it chill for 2 full minutes to permanently set the custom dental impression.
